Why do athletes take steroids?
Steroids increase the protein synthesis in cells, allowing it to multiply at a faster rate. This is why athletes use steroids, because their muscle gain rate will be boosted exponentially, allowing athletes workout time to be shortened considerably and the effects maximized. Much like a protein shake, except way more powerful, so powerful in fact that it stops your body from growing. Thus, if a 11 year old boy were to take high doses of steroids, he would grow very little over the course of his puberty.
Generally, athletes who use steroids are weight lifters, power lifters or body builders, in a survey of 120, 28% of that (roughly 34 of 120) take steroids. In football, the offensive linemen use steroids the most (67%). It is thought that the steroids will get them pumped up and more aggresive to combat their opponent.
